Background of the Give Us Wings:
Give Us Wings Uganda (GUWU) is an independent organization founded in 1999. GUWU currently works to socially and economically advance poor and vulnerable communities in Eastern Uganda since 1999. GUWU was registered with the National NGO Board as an international NGO under Registration No. S5914/8796 in 2012. The GUWU country program focus is on three interrelated thematic areas namely; Entrepreneurship development, Health and Education. As a result of its recent strategic planning exercise, GUWU embarked on restructuring to realize a technical team that would effectively deliver on its 2018-2022 strategic plan.
With an envisioning of an empowered society exercising full potential and enjoying a fulfilled life, GUWU’s mission is to empower communities to sustainably advance through holistic development. We work with community groups to improve household incomes, parents to ensure children’s access to quality education as a right. GUWU further works to improve health standards of communities through its healthcare services. All these interventions are expected to benefit Tororo and neighbouring districts. The aim of all this is to ensure sustainable community transformation where outcomes and impact are clearly measurable.
GUWU’s Credit Assistant will work under the Program Coordinator in the Building Businesses for Family Sustainability (BBFS) program and specifically under the GUWU Micro Finance project. The overall purpose is to provide day to day running of the MFI. In particular, the Credit Assistant will be responsible for this business component at all its stages.
Core duties and responsibilities:
Keeping proper records of clients
Loan disbursement, monitoring and recovery
Rebuilding Villages and Restoring Hope in Uganda
Loan appraisals- assessing on how a client is servicing the loan compared to the agreed arrangement in order to establish risky borrowers, to establish when a client may need more money as a top-up even when one has not completed the previous loan.
Updating various books of accounts
Recording daily transactions in the analysis book
Evaluate and recommend or decline client applications
Clients mobilization and education on savings and loan repayment cultures
Extension of financial advice like advising borrowers on their financial status and methonds of payment
Assessment of loan applicants
Managing the loan payment schedule
Information and communication provisions to clients and other technical staff
Handle member’s complaints and take immediate action (by the members and about members)
Negotiate loan payment standards
Post data into the accounting software
Presenting monthly reports
Work with the Program Coordinator to design the program charter clearly spelling out its BBFS component.
Work closely with other Program Officers to conceptualise, implement, monitor and evaluate the GUWU 2018 – 2022 strategic plan.
Closely collaborate with and other Program Officers in the development of budgets and plans for new projects ensuring that donor and GUWI requirements are met.
Ensure maximization of the efficient utilization of available limited financial and other resources plus efficacy in addressing the needs of target communities and households as per the organisation’s mandate.
Engage in the GUWU resource mobilization drive through identification of funding opportunities.
Carry out duties as will be assigned by the Program Coordinator
Exhibit GUWU core values and working principles at all times.
Required educational standard, Professional abilities, Skills and Knowledge:
A degree or diploma holder in the relevant fields (Economics, Agribusiness Development, Business Administration, or any other entrepreneurship-related field).
Three and more years of experience in similar work. Experience in MFI business under NGOs will be a key requirement.
Experience in community groups, cooperatives or SACCOs will be an added advantage.
Good understanding of MFI issues and related legal instruments in Uganda and Africa at large.
Working experience with national or international NGOs.
Rebuilding Villages and Restoring Hope in Uganda
Experience working with donors and other organizational supporters.
Good customer care.
Strictness to established deadlines and standards.
Ability to market products and services of the GUWU MFI project.
Ability to promptly respond to issues and multiple demands.
Ability to work in a busy environment and pay attention to details.
An effective and active listener – Gives full attention to what others communicate, taking time to understand their position and asking objectives questions.
Good computer skills.
Good command of English and any of the local languages.
