Background of the Give Us Wings:
Give Us Wings Uganda (GUWU) is an independent organization founded in 1999. GUWU currently works to socially and economically advance poor and vulnerable communities in Eastern Uganda since 1999. GUWU was registered with the National NGO Board as an international NGO under Registration No. S5914/8796 in 2012. The GUWU country program focus is on three interrelated thematic areas namely; Entrepreneurship development, Health and Education. As a result of its recent strategic planning exercise, GUWU embarked on restructuring to realize a technical team that would effectively deliver on its 2018-2022 strategic plan.
With an envisioning of an empowered society exercising full potential and enjoying a fulfilled life, GUWU’s mission is to empower communities to sustainably advance through holistic development. We work with community groups to improve household incomes, parents to ensure children’s access to quality education as a right. GUWU further works to improve health standards of communities through its healthcare services. All these interventions are expected to benefit Tororo and neighbouring districts. The aim of all this is to ensure sustainable community transformation where outcomes and impact are clearly measurable.
GUWU’s Accountant will work under the Africa Program Director. The overall purpose is to provide day to day running of the finance and accounts department. In particular, the Accountant will be responsible for the overall financial administration and managing of accounts in accordance with the legal requirements, highest ethical standards and internationally recognized financial controls and reporting practices.
Core duties and responsibilities:
Support the development and updating of financial policies, accounting procedures and standards, including keeping abreast with the new financial and tax laws in accordance to legal

requirements and the best financial practices, and ensure that all staff are well informed in their use.
Ensure that all financial transactions (Including grant disbursements) and data are correctly implemented according to GUWU policies and procedures.
Take personal initiative in enhancing technical capacities in the area of jurisdiction.
Work with the Program Coordinator to design the program charter clearly spelling out its Health component.
Work closely with Program staff to conceptualise, implement, monitor and evaluate the GUWU 2018 – 2022 strategic plan.
Closely collaborate with the Program Coordinator in the development of budgets and plans for new projects ensuring that donor and GUWI requirements are met.
Ensure that all financial documents are accurately supported, approved and coded, and that all cheque books, cheque lists, petty cash, LPOs and other relevant documents are maintained according to standards.
Ensure that staff payroll administration is verified for accuracy, properly processed and that all statutory payments such as PAYE, NSSF are made in time.
Manage banking, accounts and balances effectively and efficiently, including monthly bank reconciliations, foreign exchange and cash flow management in a timely manner.
Spearhead the development of financial statements and reports for donors and other strategic partners.
Undertake periodic check of the organisation’s assets and update the asset register accordingly.
Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual financial reports.
Ensure maximization of the efficient utilization of available limited financial and other resources plus efficacy in addressing the needs of target communities and households as per the organisation’s mandate.
Engage in the GUWU resource mobilization drive through identification of funding opportunities.
Carry out duties as will be assigned by the Africa Program Director
Exhibit GUWU core values and working principles at all times.
Required educational standard, Professional abilities, Skills and Knowledge:
A degree holder in the relevant fields (Economics, Commerce, Business Administration).
Three and more years of experience in financial management and administration work.
Experience in donor grants management with NGOs will be an added advantage.
Experience in using accounting packages, as well as MS Office.
Person of integrity and corruption-free.
Ability to keep deadlines, good reporting skills.
